The El Cortez is one of three casinos in Las Vegas that has a silver strike machine on the floor.

El Cortez Casino History:
Located at 600 East Fremont Street in Las Vegas, NV, The El Cortez has been in operation for 77 years. It opened on November 7, 1941 and is one of the oldest casino-hotel properties in Las Vegas. The theme is Spanish Colonial Revival. In 1945, the notorious Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Gus Greenbaum and Moe Sedway bought the property. In 1946, they sold it back to one of the original owners J. Kell Houssels. In 1963, Jackie Gaughan purchased the property. Gaughan lived in the El Cortez's tower penthouse and was known to be on the casino floor daily. In 2008, Gaughan sold the property to Kenny Epstein, a longtime friend and business partner.

: Jackie Gaughan lived in the hotel and played poker in the poker room until his death on March 12, 2014.

On February 22, the El Cortez was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Urban legend is that there are ghosts and bodies buried in the basement of the El Cortez.... Jackie Gaughan paid for the funerals of a number of employees over the years - some of their erns are stored in the basement. (said by Kenny Epstein in an interview)

When Jackie purchased the El Cortez in 1963, he inherited the care of Mobster Irish Green, who did right by Bugsy Siegel and got put up in the El Cortez for life.
